2016 – With Professor Stephani Robson we redesign our two credit Strategic Hospitality in Sports Class into a full three-credit class entitled Hospitality Design Thinking, teaching John’s proprietary process for applying hospitality as business strategy in sports, healthcare, wellness, retail and other industries.

About the Course

Hospitality is about engaging people through genuine and warm experiences. Once solely the province of lodging and foodservice businesses, hospitality is now being recognized as a key aspect of many other kinds of business and service ventures. Smart managers must adopt a more strategic perspective on hospitality as just one part of a much larger brand experience that deserves careful consideration, design and management.

In this course, you will learn a process for injecting hospitality into any organization with a particular emphasis on the built environment. This process, a hospitality-focused approach to “design thinking”, is both a proven methodology and an important business skill that will serve you no matter which direction your career takes you.

Course Objectives

After successful completion of all work in this course, you should be able to:

• Describe the basic principles of hospitality and the role these play in customer engagement
• Conduct wide-ranging research on customers and context as part of an initial “discovery” process
• Identify opportunities and operational considerations for new or improved hospitality offerings in a particular business or service context
• Assess existing operations and project the effect of new hospitality initiatives
• Hone your team skills by working with classmates throughout a course-long project
• Develop your skills in communicating effectively with a real world client
• And, most important of all, apply the principles of design thinking to a hospitality problem.
